AI in Learning and Teaching

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to address some of the biggest challenges in education today, innovate teaching and learning practices, and accelerate progress towards SDG 4: Quality Education, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education while promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all

AI experts and educators working with students in K-12 settings agree that it is really important for the education system to prepare students with the skills they need to succeed in the age of AI. ChatGPT and other AI tools have become a regular part of our lives, so educational institutions need to find ways to incorporate this technology into their teaching and learning methods in a positive and effective way, while also being aware of any potential downsides it may have.

By using AI tools in education, we can simplify teachers' lives. Tasks like adjusting texts for different levels, creating examples, generating quiz or discussion questions, and finding examples can be outsourced to AI, freeing up more time for teachers to focus on what they do best – being in the classroom and interacting with students.

Purpose

The intention of this experience is for you to:

• Better understand the basics of AI (what it is and how it works)
• Evaluate selected AI resources for quality, accuracy, and effectiveness.
  
• Explore, evaluate, curate, and adopt new AI resources and tools for learning.
• Learn how AI can support teacher
• Discuss the legal and ethical implications of AI
• Model use AI to support creativity and creative expression to communicate ideas, knowledge, or connections.
• Explore how the use of new and emerging technologies can support and promote student learning.

Task and steps

Step 1. Analyze the common questions and fears posed in a lecture:

• AI systems collect and process data, raising concerns about data privacy and security.
• Misuse of AI for purposes like surveillance can infringe on students' privacy and autonomy.
• Overreliance on AI technology could diminish the role of human educators
• A lack of training and support may hinder effective AI implementation in the classroom
• AI algorithms can inherit biases from their training data, potentially perpetuating inequalities.
• The ethical use of AI in education is a concern, particularly in areas like surveillance and behavior analysis.
• Ease of cheating on certain assignments
• Excessive dependence can diminish critical thinking
• Potential for misinformation 
• Is using AI to prepare for class considered cheating? 
• Can I keep up with the trends in AI?
• Will AI replace my job?
• Will AI enhance or kill creativity?
• Will the tools remain free?
• What is next in AI?
